What we do

As members of the AZA accredited zoo community, we have the unique opportunity to contribute knowledge, data and biomaterials of managed species to research that improves animal health and prevents species extinction. The mission of the Center for Zoonomics is to integrate conservation and medical genomics to improve human, animal and ecosystem health.

Gorilla Genomics Project

Researchers affiliated with the Center for Zoonomics have been using whole-genome data acquired from multiple zoos and generations of gorillas in the AZA population to better understand the population’s genetic health and investigate potential genetic causes of heart disease in captive gorillas.
